I was raised in a family of artists in New Orleans and I have been making my living as an abstract painter for more than 40 years. While my works have been sold in high-end galleries across the nation, and are represented in many corporate collections, several years ago I decided to pull out of all galleries in favor of dealing directly with collectors. Over the past few years I also developed a series of online video tutorials that have taught abstract painting to thousands of artists.

As a painter, sculptor, and photographer, my work is distinguished by multiple layers of eroded surfaces with texture, color and pattern - all influenced by growing up in New Orleans. Sections of aged and decrepit walls, floors and other features of both the inside and outside of buildings are my inspiration. Repetition of architectural forms and random markings evoke a feeling of time gone by, and the weathering of lived-in spaces.

Although I have formally studied art in my earlier years, my approach has developed into an intuitive process of dialogue with the painting. The joy of discovering new and unexpected color dynamics continues to keep me engaged.

  1. The art schools that I’ve attended are Tulane University in New Orleans, Otis College of Art and Design in LA, Gage in Seattle and Washington University in St. Louis. But you know what? Not one person who has ever bought any of my paintings has asked me where I went to school.

  2. My first job out of art school was working at a boat company in New Orleans as a draftsman. I was the only female in an all-male engineering department creating ink and pencil drawings.

  3. I got my Master of Social Work degree at Tulane and planned to work with cancer patients using art as therapy. I didn’t realize I was going to be writing TONS of papers and I didn’t know how to type. So what did I do? I hired a typist to do my homework several days before I had to turn it in.

  4. In 2017 I was commissioned to create a 17-foot painting for the Ace Hotel in New Orleans. When I went to see it installed, I noticed they hung it upside down.

  5. After withdrawing from all my galleries, I tried something new and showed my work twice a year as a very popular show in Texas. When I was there, I was stung by a scorpion and lived to tell the tale. Yes, it hurt like hell!

  6. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would start a YouTube Channel. At 65 years old growing it to over 80,000 subscribers within 5 years.

  7. My monthly Art with Adele Academy is an actual art school with over 200 videos for abstract artists. And, there’s only one teacher - ME.

  8. The greatest gift that I’ve had from launching my Art with Adele Academy is that I’ve met artists from all over the world. There are over 20 countries represented in our community such as India, France, Australia, Serbia, Vienna, England, Iceland and many, many more.

  9. I like having a uniform, which consists of the same jumper in seven different colors so I don’t have to think about what to wear on a daily basis. Funny story, a student I had never met recognized me, even when I was wearing a mask and hat. When I asked her how she knew it was me, she said, “Because of your jumper!”

  10. My favorite city in the world is Amsterdam. My father immigrated from Holland and my real name is Adele Kaars-Sijpesteijn but as it was Americanized, he changed it to Sypesteyn.
