Three of My Favorite Art Materials

I love exploring different materials to use to see how I could incorporate something new and exciting in my work.

One of the things I didn’t expect to fall in love with is large Post-it’s that you can peel off and stick on the wall.

They are my go-to for lots of different projects:

·        I cover my worktable with them, which makes it easy to change between paintings.

·        Pulling them off my worktable so I can cut them up and add to my collage pile.

·        Letting my grandkids paint and draw on them and then I can just peel off and fill my wall with their work. (I actually cut and tear some of theirs for my collages.)

·        Sticking one on the wall and creating an organized calendar for the week or the month.

Post-it offers different sizes but my two favorites are 15x18” and 25x30”. I get these from Amazon and just love them. The smaller of the two sizes comes as a three-pack.

The second tool I absolutely love is from the hardware store.

It’s a trowel!

How do I use a trowel and why do I love it? I use it to skim paint across the surface of my painting. Doing this creates unexpected areas where the paint will catch the canvas and other areas where it won’t.

It also helps to obscure an area I want to cover but without a brushstroke.

The third tool I use is plastic wrap!

It is like using some sort of printer and it makes the most wonderful marks.

All you have to do is put paint on your palette, gently lay some plastic wrap over it, and then press the plastic wrap against the canvas.

Hopefully you’ll find these tools useful to you if you haven’t tried them before.
